Essential Oils 101
There are hundreds of essential oils available in the market. Lavender Oil is well known for its relaxing properties, helping to quell stress and anxiety. Tea Tree Oil is widely accepted for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Essential Oils are usually extracted with the ancient process of distillation.
During this process, steam is passed through the plant material to release their volatile aromatic compounds. And, as we know from making a salad dressing, water and oil do not mix, making the separation easier. Depending on the oil to be extracted, the method may change. Some plants are more delicate, heat-sensitive or can yield higher quality oils for which other methods are used:
- Cold-Pressing: In this method, the oil is mechanically extracted by pressing the peels to release the aromatic oil. Just like in your cold pressed orange and carrot juice, this method can help retain more aromas and nutrients.
- Solvent Extraction: Some delicate flowers, such as jasmine and rose, are too fragile for steam distillation. With this method, solvents like hexane are used to dissolve the essential oil from the plant material. The solvent is then removed, leaving behind the essential oil.
- CO2 Extraction: This method uses carbon dioxide under high pressure to extract essential oils. It is often used for plants that are heat-sensitive and can yield high-quality oils.
Incorporating Lime Essential Oil into Your Skincare Routine
Essential oils are versatile in nature. There are so many ways in which you can incorporate them into your skincare routine and your daily life. For lime essential oil, you can add a few drops of the oil directly into a cotton pad. This will help brighten your skin while adding a refreshing scent to your nightly routine.
Do not forget that essential oils need to be properly diluted before applying them on your skin. This is to avoid any adverse reactions. You can use carrier oils such as coconut or almond oil to dilute them.
A patch test before application can help identify any adverse reactions, ensuring a seamless experience. When it comes to my skin, I prefer products that already have the essential oils in them. This avoids an extra step in my skincare routine, but you can pick and try! Whatever works best for you.
