Today, I will review three non Fields of Yarrow skincare products for fine lines, explaining the pros and cons I have been observing for each based on my criteria for sustainable skincare.
As I grow older, I realized I had to start caring for and protecting my skin. My goal has never been to hide my age but rather to age gracefully. While at Fields of Yarrow I directly produce natural skincare products that specifically target the concern of aging skin, I have researched myself which other skincare product are on the market to get rid of fine lines in my skin, and I was shocked.
All-mighty Google gave me more than 68 million results to my search. What? Then, how can I know which one is the best product for fine lines? What is good at reducing signs of aging? Being a nature lover, I am completely against using Botox on myself, and, realizing the crazy amount of anti-aging products available, I decided to reduce the 68 million hits into this article.
The Importance of Using Specialized Skincare Products
Once we reach a certain age, we notice that we cannot run up a flight of stairs as we used to; partying, or even just going out two days in a row, becomes a huge no-no. Many things change when we start getting older, and it’s something we can see and feel in our skin.
The standard skincare routine of cleansing and moisturizing may not be enough to address fine lines effectively. While dehydrated skin is one of the factors behind these signs of aging, there’s more at play than just hydration. There are many 100% organic ingredients that, backed by science, can give your skin the necessary elements to look younger.
From retinol to hyaluronic acid, I created a comprehensive list that explains the top 5 organic ingredients to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and how they work. Make sure that whichever products for fine lines you choose has at least one of those natural wonders.
The aging process naturally reduces collagen and elastin production that, mixed with environmental stressors, can make us look and feel older than we are. Fine lines and wrinkles start appearing around our eyes, mouth, and nose, and we become more self-aware of the fact that we are growing up.
Top 3 Products for Fine Lines reviewed
Now to what we came for, the product list. Before listing them, I would like to explain my methodology for choosing the products. Many of you who regularly come to read my posts know that I am the founder of my own organic skincare brand: Fields of Yarrow. You could say that my opinion is biased due to that, and it might be true. I decided to start Fields of Yarrow because it became harder and harder for me to find skincare brands and products that met my criteria, and I was not willing to sacrifice any of them. The three products mentioned below are international brands that ensure that their products will reduce fine lines.
Bio Retinoid Youth Cream
“A firming moisturiser for lines and wrinkles, with a visible lift effect.”
Ren Clean Skincare Bio Retinoid Youth Cream
Review
This moisturizer, made of 92% naturally derived ingredients (and 8% of others), promotes a firmer and more plump skin without irritation.
- Key ingredients: This is a product with a vegan formulation and cruelty-free practices. It’s main ingredient is a plant-based retinol alternative, Bidens Pilosa mixed with a red microalgae.
- Skin benefits: Bidens pilosa can reduce the appearance of fine lines. The fact that it’s a plant-based retinol alternative allows you to layer it with another retinol product if you would like the extra Vitamin A boost. Additionally, the red microalgae provide a lifting and smoothing effect.
- When to apply: According to Ren Clean Skincare, one to two pumps of this cream can be applied both morning and night to the face and neck.
Criteria check
- ✅ Availability of the product: Ren is a brand available in most Western countries.
- ❌ The ingredients: This youth cream has oleyl alcohol and myristyl myristate as emollients. These two ingredients can be highly comedogenic and slightly irritant. Plus, as fragrances, it has linalool, citronellol and geraniol. These three ingredients are classified as icky by the INCI Decoder.
- ✅ The ecological impact: Ren’s sustainability practices are quite good. They have a clean-to-planet impact with an Infinity Recycling process and use clean ingredients. Their partnership with Verdn is an excellent example of eco-collaboration.
MY OPINION
Although Ren’s Clean Skincare Bio Retinoid Youth Cream ticks my box when it comes to sustainability, I would not advise it for people that have acne-prone skin due to its comedogenic ingredients. For people with dry or normal skin, this plant-based retinol product could be a great way to go to reduce fine lines.
Rapid Wrinkle Repair Cream
Formulated with dermatologist-proven retinol, this anti-wrinkle moisturizer fights fine lines, dullness, wrinkles and dark spots. Plus, Hyaluronic Acid adds plumping moisture to help hydrate and rejuvenate the look of skin.
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream
Review
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream is what I would define as a nice drugstore retinol option. It’s one of those products that you throw into your cart next between the bread and milk. It glides on the skin and absorbs quickly.
- Key ingredients: Retinol and hyaluronic acid are the main ingredients of this cream.
- Skin benefits: The mixture of hyaluronic acid and retinol targets hydration, fine lines, dullness, and dark spots to reveal a more youthful complexion over time.
- When to apply: According to Neutrogena, a pearl-sized amount can be applied to the face and neck twice daily.
Criteria check
- ✅ Availability of the product: Neutrogena is a brand that is widely available in most western countries.
- ❌ The ingredients: This regenerating cream has two types of alcohol (stearyl and cetearyl) commonly used to control the cream’s viscosity. It also contains ceteareth-20, a compound used to emulsify the product. These three ingredients can irritate the skin and are comedogenic, meaning they can clog pores.
- ❌ The ecological impact: Their website shares their clean promise: 100% recyclable plastic packaging by 2025. Neutrogena’s parent company, [Johnson & Johnson, had revenue for the twelve months ending June 30th, 2023, of over $97 billion USD](https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/JNJ/johnson-johnson/revenue#:~:text=Johnson %26 Johnson revenue for the twelve months ending June 30,a 13.55%25 increase from 2020.). From my point of view, a company that sells almost USD 100,000,000,000.00 a year could, at least, have sustainable packing today, in 2023. Their 2025 mark of having recyclable plastic packaging is, for me, proof of their minimum commitment to the environment (recyclable, so their packages are not going to be from recycled materials, they are just going to be able to be recycled…)
MY OPINION
Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream could be a good option to treat fine lines. This brand is known to make good skincare products at reasonable prices. I just wish this multinational company would take more seriously their sustainability practices and make it a priority to protect the environment and reduce waste.
Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle Correcting Cream
Moisturizer for wrinkles helps strengthen and nourish for smoother, younger-looking skin.
Clinique Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle Correcting Cream
REVIEW
Clinique’s wrinkle cream is an great first correcting cream for younger skin. It’s formulated to be safe for all skin types and provides intense moisture, especially for dry skin.
- Key ingredients: This oil and fragrance-free cream is formulated with a peptide complex, hyaluronic acid, soybean seed extract, and shea butter.
- Skin benefits: This cream helps plump the skin without making is feel oily or heavy. Its ingredients are known to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and fortify the skin’s barrier.
- When to apply: According to Clinique, this can be applied both morning and night, along with SPF during the day.
Criteria check
- ✅ Availability of the product: Clinique is a brand that is widely available in most western countries.
- ❌ The ingredients: This correcting cream has isostearyl neopentanoate as an emollient, which is an irritant and comedogenic chemical compound, plus cetearyl alcohol, which is also comedogenic, meaning it clogs your pores.
- ❌ The ecological impact: Clinique is proud to support its parent company, Estée Lauder Companies, in reaching this goal: By 2025, 75% of our packaging will be recyclable, refillable, reusable, recycled, or recoverable. With an income of more than $1 billion USD as of March 2023, I think they could be more invested in reaching their sustainability goals faster.
MY OPINION
Although I have tried Clinique’s Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle Correcting Cream in the past, if you have sensitive skin you should definitely patch test it before actual usage, due to the possible irritation it could cause.
Factors to Consider When Purchasing Skincare Products to reduce Fine Lines
Having thousands of products that look alike and have similar active principles, how do I choose the best product to reduce fine lines? I always base myself on the following criteria to help me decide:
- The availability of the product: You can find the most amazing product that leaves your skin feeling like a baby’s cheek, but if you cannot use it regularly, what’s the point? If you need to surf the dark web to have an undescribed package sent to your house at night or if you need to harass your friends while they travel to get you a particular product, it simply won’t work. The regular use of skincare products is what makes a difference, so make sure you can easily buy or order the product you like.
- The ingredients: And I do mean ingredients, plural. Even if I’m looking for a product for a specific skin concern, such as my fine lines, the rest of the ingredients are equally important. Some products add parabens, a preservative, alcohol, or fragrances that can severely irritate sensitive skin. I always look for plant-based, non-toxic skincare products to reduce the possible unwanted side effects of synthetic compounds. This is such a significant topic that it deserves its own article where you can understand How to Incorporate Non-Toxic Skincare into Your Daily Routine. To decode ingredient lists like a pro, I recommend using the INCI decoder.
- The ecological impact of my skincare routine: I can no longer ignore the impact my actions have on our planet. The month of July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded, and half of the world is burning due to drought and extreme heat. I must ensure that all the skincare products I use are ethically sourced. I look for companies that strive to leave things a little better than they found them. Renewable energy sources must be used for manufacturing, sustainable packaging must come with my products, recycling programs have to be in place, and eco-friendly shipping practices are non-negotiable for my beauty products. It’s a huge plus when the company collaborates with NGOs that protect our environment.
always check the sustainability tab of every company I plan to buy from. This factor is so close to my heart that I dedicated an entire blog entry to discussing the environmental impact of non-toxic skincare.
How Will You Choose Your Next Skincare Product?
I have shared my method to ensure that the skincare products I buy are as good for my skin as they are for the world. You might think that I’m very demanding with my skincare, and I am. Ever since I became a mom, it became even more important for me to protect the world that I will leave my children. Between manufacturing processes and post-usage waste, we must be ever more aware of the impact we have on our planet. Use all the available tools to research the products you want to buy because nobody wants to have perfect skin in a burning world.
